WHO IT'S FOR
If you are responsible for people and performance, this book is for you.
Goal Machine is written for leaders and decision-makers who are responsible for setting direction, leading people and improving performance at any level of the organisation.
If you have ever felt the gap between where your team is and where it should be, this book gives you the system to close it.
THE PROBLEM
Most goals don't fail because of the people
They fail because the system underneath them isn't strong enough.
You have set the goal. You have shared the strategy. You have briefed the team. And then, somewhere between the boardroom and daily execution, momentum quietly disappears.
It is not usually a talent or effort problem. The issue is structural: there is no operating system connecting the goal to the daily behaviours that create results. Without that system, even the best people default to habit, distraction and short-term priority.
WHO IT IS FOR
A framework built from the field, not the classroom.
Goal Machine introduces the Three Laws and Five Principles of sustained performance — a practical system for understanding what drives or blocks execution in real teams, in real organisations.
The book gives leaders a structured way to diagnose performance gaps, align their people around shared priorities, and build a rhythm that turns ambition into measurable progress over time.
Every chapter is grounded in a true story drawn from Darren's experience across elite sport, high-performance sales, leadership and building a global SaaS company. Each chapter closes with a practical leadership reflection, something a leader can take and apply with their own team immediately.
Goals set direction
The foundational rules that determine whether a performance system holds or collapses under real-world conditions.
The Five Principles
The operating principles that connect a leader's goals to the daily behaviours of their team, closing the gap between intention and execution.
The 90-day Rhythm
A practical time structure that gives teams the cadence they need to build momentum, review progress and course-correct before it is too late.

What the book teaches
A framework built from the field, not the classroom.
Goal Machine introduces the Three Laws and Five Principles of sustained performance. It outlines a Human Performance Operating System that determines whether goals translate into sustained execution or simply fade.
It gives leaders a practical, story-led way to diagnose performance gaps, align their people around shared priorities and build a rhythm that turns ambition into measurable progress over time.
Every chapter is grounded in a true story drawn from Darren's experience across elite sport, high-performance sales, leadership and building a global SaaS company across 42 countries. Each chapter closes with a practical leadership reflection, something a leader can take and apply with their own team immediately.
THE THREE LAWS
Why performance breaks down
The Three Laws explain the structural reasons goals fail to translate into sustained behaviour.
THE FIVE PRINCIPLES
How to build a performance system
The Five Principles give leaders a repeatable architecture for connecting goals to daily action across their team.
THE 90-DAY RHYTHM
From strategy to daily execution
A practical time structure that keeps goals visible, progress measurable and teams aligned, without constant management.
About the author

''Hi, I’m Darren Whitaker-Barnett. I wrote Goal Machine to show why goals fail without systems''.
Darren Whitaker-Barnett has spent his career in high-performance environments, from elite sport and competitive sales to executive leadership and building a global SaaS company from New Zealand into 42 countries.
Across those environments, he saw the same pattern: ambitious goals, talented people, and a gap between potential and performance. Over time, he realised the issue was rarely the people. It was the system around the goal.
Goal Machine was created because that system did not exist in a form that leaders could actually use. It is built from decades of lived experience in performance environments where the stakes were real, the feedback was immediate, and the results were visible.
This is the book Darren needed but could not find.
A career built on performance.
Darren Whitaker-Barnett has built his career at the intersection of elite performance, commercial leadership and technology. Goal Machine is the product of everything he has learned.

Darren's mission
To help 100 million people turn their potential into performance.
Darren’s mission is to help 100 million people turn their potential into performance because he believes most people are capable of more than their environment allows them to deliver. Goal Machine was written to close that gap, giving leaders a practical system for connecting goals to daily action, visible progress, meaningful recognition and sustained performance.
